Description
What the Defender 238LE does at a back exit door
The Defender 238LE adds smart credentials to a back-of-house exit door that already has a panic bar. These are the doors employees use to take out trash, accept deliveries, exit during a fire drill, and pop out for a smoke — high-traffic exit points where you need an audit trail and credentialed entry from the outside, without touching the panic device that legally has to swing open under crash-bar pressure. The 238LE is the smart lever trim that mounts on the exterior; the existing panic bar handles egress unchanged. You get six credential types on the outside (fingerprint, PIN, RFID, eBadges, scan-to-open, physical key) plus full LocklyOS audit trails. Fire-code compliance is preserved because the interior panic device is untouched.
Where the 238LE fits: apartment back exits, warehouse, school egress, restaurant kitchens
Apartment building back exit doors that residents and staff use after hours. Commercial back-of-house exits for offices, warehouses, and factories where employees come and go through a side or rear door. Schools and educational facilities securing exterior egress points. Restaurant kitchen exits where prep and cleaning staff need credentialed access. Retail back-of-house and stockroom exits. Multifamily exit doors for staff and delivery access. The 238LE specifically addresses back exit doors with panic bars — not customer-facing storefront entries (use the 238LM for those).

Buying and installing the Defender 238LE
Panic-bar retrofits are not a self-install scenario for most owners. Compatibility verification and backplate fit can vary by device. Buy from 1-800-Unlocks. Installation is optional but recommended for storefront retrofits — certified locksmiths in our network handle the deadlatch fit, the egress hardware, and the ADA height verification as part of a single visit. If you’re a DIY-comfortable owner with a clean compatible door, you can install yourself. If you’d rather a professional handle it, contact us and we’ll connect you to a certified installer in your area.
